I took the bait
The update I wrote yesterday was before my actual "training" started. By the end of the day, I came to the conclusion that I really did need a laptop for this work. I had no idea how much MS network, work I would be doing to get these things running and fixed. Plus, it would be nice to have a communication/entertainment medium available with me when I'm out of town.
I when and ordered a Dell Inspiron 8200. Pretty nice specs too. I configured it with a P4 1.9Ghz processor, 384megs of RAM, 30gig HD, XP Pro, Radeon 9000 64meg video, and a DVD player. We'll see how things end up coming to me after it arrives.
